Sweden, Norway, and Denmark Pledge $500M in Military Aid to Ukraine Under New US-Led Initiative

STOCKHOLM, Aug 6 — In a bold move to strengthen Ukraine’s defenses against Russia’s ongoing invasion, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark have announced a joint $500 million donation of military equipment and ammunition. The support will be facilitated through a new US-led mechanism designed to accelerate weapons deliveries to Kyiv.

The initiative follows a similar €500 million ($577 million) pledge from the Netherlands and falls under the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) — a fast-track procurement plan launched last month by US President Donald Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

🔗 Strengthening Ukraine — and Europe

“Ukraine is not only fighting for its own security, but also for our security,”
Swedish Defense Minister Pal Jonson

At a press conference in Stockholm, Jonson emphasized the broader European stake in Ukraine’s fight, calling the aid package a sign of regional solidarity and a strategic deterrent to Russian aggression.

He added that Sweden’s contribution alone is valued at $275 million, and will include:

  • Air defense systems (including Patriot munitions)

  • Anti-tank weaponry

  • Ammunition and spare parts

The remaining $225 million will come from Denmark and Norway.

🛡️ A NATO-Backed Push

NATO chief Mark Rutte praised the Scandinavian countries for their swift action in supporting Ukraine under the PURL mechanism, which taps into existing US stockpiles to accelerate delivery timelines and improve battlefield readiness.

“Since the earliest days of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Denmark, Norway and Sweden have been steadfast in their support for Ukraine,” said Rutte.

🪖 Aid Momentum Builds

The Nordic pledge adds fresh momentum to Europe’s military backing of Ukraine, following recent commitments from:

  • Netherlands (€500M)

  • Germany (new Patriot missiles)

  • Poland (border defense logistics)

Since Russia’s invasion began in February 2022, NATO and EU countries have increasingly ramped up aid, focusing on air defense, artillery, and logistics, amid Ukraine’s urgent requests for battlefield reinforcements.
