DUBAI: Netflix’s latest thriller Untamed may look like another formulaic murder mystery at first glance — a troubled investigator, a rookie partner, a dark past — but beneath its familiar setup lies a gripping drama elevated by stellar performances and breathtaking visuals.
Eric Bana stars as Kyle Turner, a National Park Service Investigative Services Branch special agent haunted by grief and battling alcoholism. Reluctantly teamed with rookie park ranger Naya Vasquez (Lily Santiago in a breakout role), Turner investigates a murder that uncovers buried secrets from his past.
Set in California’s Yosemite National Park — though filmed mostly in British Columbia with striking Yosemite shots — the wilderness plays as much of a role as the characters themselves. Like the best Nordic noir, the landscapes serve as both beauty and danger, reminding viewers how small civilization feels in nature’s expanse.
Bana delivers a nuanced performance, steering clear of tired “tough guy” clichés and giving Turner depth and empathy. Santiago matches his intensity, portraying Vasquez as sharp, capable, and far from a mere sidekick. Supporting turns from Sam Neill as Chief Park Ranger Paul Souter and Rosemarie DeWitt as Turner’s ex-wife Jill add layers of warmth and complexity.
With its mix of emotional depth, rich character work, and awe-inspiring scenery, Untamed proves there’s still life — and plenty of suspense — in the murder mystery genre.
