JERUSALEM – August 1, 2025
The Israeli military announced on Friday that it successfully intercepted a hypersonic ballistic missile fired from Yemen by the Iran-backed Houthi militia.
The missile — identified as a “Palestine 2” hypersonic ballistic weapon — was reportedly aimed at Israel’s Ben Gurion International Airport, one of the busiest and most critical infrastructures in the country.
🚨 Israel’s Statement
“Following the sirens that sounded a short while ago in several areas in Israel, a missile that was launched from Yemen was intercepted,” the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed.
No casualties or damage were reported following the interception.
🛰️ Houthi Claim: Targeting Israel in Support of Palestine
In a televised statement, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree confirmed the launch, claiming it was an act of solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. The Houthi faction has frequently launched missile and drone attacks toward Israel since the October 2023 Hamas attack that triggered the ongoing Gaza conflict.
“We targeted Ben Gurion Airport using our latest ‘Palestine 2’ hypersonic missile,” Saree said.
🔥 Ongoing Tensions: Ceasefire Ended, Attacks Resume
The Houthis had temporarily halted hostilities during a two-month ceasefire in Gaza, which ended in March 2025. Since the ceasefire collapse, they have resumed cross-border attacks, focusing on Israeli infrastructure.
In retaliation, Israel has conducted multiple strikes inside Yemen, specifically:
-
Houthi-held ports
-
Airfields in Sanaa, the capital under Houthi control
📍 Background: Israel–Houthi Escalation
-
The Houthis, backed by Iran, have expanded their operational range to include hypersonic technology, raising regional security concerns.
-
Israel sees the Houthis’ involvement as part of a broader Iran-led axis seeking to destabilize the region through proxy warfare.
