Killing of Palestinian Activist in West Bank Sparks Global Outrage

RAMALLAH:
The killing of a well-known Palestinian activist in the occupied West Bank has triggered widespread condemnation and intensified tensions in the region.

According to local sources, Israeli forces shot and killed 35-year-old activist Yazan al-Sheikh during a raid in Al-Amari refugee camp near Ramallah. The raid, which took place early Monday morning, reportedly involved heavy gunfire and the use of live ammunition.

Calls for Accountability Grow Louder

Human rights organizations and political leaders have condemned the killing, calling it an extrajudicial execution and demanding an independent investigation.

“Yet another life taken with impunity,” said a spokesperson from Amnesty International. “This continuous violence must be addressed with real accountability.”

Palestinian officials described the incident as a “deliberate assassination”, while Israel’s military claimed the operation was aimed at arresting “wanted individuals involved in terrorist activities.”

Tensions on the Rise

The killing comes amid growing unrest in the West Bank, where clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinians have surged in recent months. The United Nations has warned that 2025 may become one of the deadliest years for Palestinians in recent history.

Activists on the ground say the international community’s silence has emboldened Israeli actions, further deepening mistrust and hostility.

Funeral Draws Thousands

Thousands of Palestinians attended Sheikh’s funeral, chanting slogans and waving flags in a powerful display of anger and unity. Protesters vowed to continue the resistance and demanded justice for what they called “a martyr of freedom.”
